The NSH Difference

Not just another apprenticeship scheme.

Most apprenticeships place you with one employer for the whole programme. You learn one way of doing things, in one type of operation, with limited perspective beyond your own team. NSH is built differently.

As an NSH apprentice, you rotate through multiple consortium partner venues β€” gaining exposure to different styles, standards, and teams. You leave with breadth of experience, genuine adaptability, and a professional network that most people take a decade to build.

And every step of the way, you're supported by a personal mentor, enrichment activities that go well beyond the standard curriculum, and a community of fellow professionals who share the same Northern values you do.

FAQs

Common questions from apprentices & parents

Can't find what you're looking for? Get in touch and we'll answer personally.

Ask a Question β†’
Do I need any qualifications to apply? +
No formal qualifications are required to apply for a Foundation or Level 2 apprenticeship. We're looking for people with genuine enthusiasm, a willingness to work hard, and the kind of character that makes a great hospitality professional. We'll assess your suitability through conversation β€” not exams.
How much will I earn? +
NSH apprentices are employed under standard employment terms through our flexi agency partner Inspire/ATA. Pay meets or exceeds the National Apprenticeship Minimum Wage, with many consortium partners offering above this. Full details will be confirmed during your application process.
Where will I be working? +
You'll rotate through consortium partner venues across Manchester and Northern England. Placements are arranged in advance and your travel and logistics are considered in the rotation planning. All consortium partners are quality-assured hospitality businesses that have committed to the NSH standard of mentorship and support.
How long does the apprenticeship last? +
This depends on the programme and level you're joining. Foundation apprenticeships run for approximately 6 months. Level 2 programmes run for 12 months. Level 3 programmes run for 12–18 months. Level 4 programmes run for 18–24 months. All programmes include both on-the-job and off-job training time.
Is this suitable for someone already working in hospitality? +
Absolutely. NSH programmes include pathways for existing hospitality staff looking to formalise their experience and progress β€” particularly at Level 3 and Level 4. These are also available as CPD routes through employer partners. Speak to us about your current experience and we'll advise on the best entry point.
What happens after I complete my apprenticeship? +
NSH is designed for the long term. Graduates can progress directly to higher-level NSH programmes, take permanent positions with consortium partner employers, or enter the wider industry as NSH-qualified professionals. We actively support all graduates in their next steps and maintain a growing alumni community.
What's the Culinary vs. Accommodation & Operations split? +
NSH offers two primary tracks: the Culinary Track (Commis Chef β†’ Chef de Partie β†’ Senior Culinary Chef) and the Hospitality Operations Track (Team Member β†’ Supervisor β†’ Manager, across Food & Beverage, Accommodation, and Events). Foundation apprentices get exposure to both before choosing a specialisation.
